Product Used: Shire

Colour: Downs Red

Description:

A stunning private house, designed in a Lutyens style, has turned from a vision into a reality thanks to genuine hand made clay tiles from Keymer, the UK's oldest manufacturer of hand made clay tiles.

Lime Kiln House is situated in a dramatic location, set high in the 35 acre site of an old quarry. Partly due to its exemplary design, it is one of the few houses to be granted planning permission under the PPG7 (Planning Policy Guidance 7) regulations for large houses in open countryside.

Designed by Western Design Architects, the house follows a butterfly plan and utilises an ‘Arts and Crafts' approach to the specification of products. As such, only the best quality hand made materials, that would allow the property to softly blend into the surrounding area were chosen.

For the large roof, genuine hand made clay tiles from Keymer were the natural choice. The company has been producing genuine hand made clay tiles for over 400 years and offers experience, heritage and quality that cannot be matched by any other tile maker. Unlike machine made or hand crafted tiles, each Keymer tile is unique, created using many of the techniques employed four centuries ago. Truly created by hand, they offer variations in colour, texture and shape to produce an individual, timeless product that will become more impressive with age.

Tiles from Keymer's Shire range in Downs Red colour were chosen for the roof which features a number of architectural details including standard hips, cropped hips, standard valleys, lead valleys, cut valleys, sprocketed eaves and open eaves. In addition, the tiles were also used for vertical tiling on a number of elevations to add a further element of interest, including unusual stepped vertical tiling on the gable ends.
