Local authorities would allow nothing but the highest standard of materials to be specified for a new build in West Common Way, an upmarket area of Harpenden, Hertfordshire. With a long history of clay products in the district, Keymer's handmade clay tiles were the only choice for the house's traditional roof.

After the demolition of an older property, the new detached house was commissioned on the grounds that it would remain in keeping with surrounding properties. This meant that clay bricks and tiles were essential.

Keymer's Shire handmade clay tiles were specified for the building's large and commanding roof, which featured a number of angled roof slopes. The tiles were also laid across part of the gable wall.

With matching clay roof tiles and brickwork, the house has a unified and traditional aesthetic. The natural, warm red tones give the house a vibrant, but elegant look, which couldn't be matched by modern, machine-made products.

Keymer made sure the house received the exact visual presence that was specified. To achieve this, all three colours from the Shire clay tile range were used - Priory, Heritage and Downs Red.

Manufactured especially for the project, as part of Keymer's bespoke creations, the company also purpose made near-black clay tiles. This was necessary in order to achieve the exact colour blend, when laid alongside the Shire range.

Mixed on site, these four shades created a varied and interesting design that runs throughout the roofscape. It perfectly compliments the brickwork, whilst standing out with its own high quality prestige.

Additionally, Keymer manufactured and supplied its handmade Hog Back and Third Round terracotta ridges to further assist the blend with existing local roofs.

Keymer's products have displayed how, when it comes to roof tiles, there is no substitute for handmade clay tiles. Aside from offering a genuinely traditional aesthetic, one that can not be matched by machine made materials, they are ideal for meeting the demanding standards of local authorities to protect UK heritage, traditional values and aesthetics.
