Keymer achieves environmental management certification
15/09/2009
It is with pride that Keymer has recently attained certification to the ISO 14001:2004 internationally accepted standard of environmental management. This is the result of its commitment to producing and distributing environmentally friendly hand made clay roof tiles.
It means that Keymer's customers can be at ease when using their products, as they are assured to the highest eco-friendly standard. Local authorities, for which the certification is mandatory, can now see the company's green credentials are of the highest order.
The accreditation process began in August last year by the national standards body BSI and the company successfully passed assessment in April. The process was enjoyable and informative for the Keymer staff, who provided many of the new ideas to make the company even more environmentally friendly.
To ensure efficiency, Keymer uses a holistic approach. Clay waste from the workshop floor is recovered to be reused in the tile making process, lessening the need for quarrying. The use of energy, water and gas is also carefully limited to ensure minimal environmental impact.
The four hundred year old company has at all times ensured that its practices have been eco-friendly. From digging Wealden clay at its on-site reserves to lessen their carbon footprint to restoring used quarries, Keymer has always diligently sought to protect the environment. The certification is a mark that illustrates Keymer's willingness and ability to go above and beyond simple compliance with environmental legislation.
Now that the company has been awarded the certification of excellence in Environmental Management it can focus on the next four hundred years of successfully producing high quality craft tiles to the greenest standards.
