Keymer delivers a touch of magic to an ageing beauty
11/05/2009
St Albans oldest residential house, The Sally Lunn, has been given a stunning new roof, topped off with approximately 10,000 Traditional tiles from hand made clay roof tile specialist, Keymer. It's made such a good impression with passers by, homeowners, Mr and Mrs Naylor, have had notes through their door asking where the tiles are from.
Specified for their established history and elite quality, the entire roof was first stripped, then re-roofed using the handmade clay tiles. Blending effortlessly with its historic surroundings, the newly tiled roof depicts the natural material and colour reminiscent of a traditional Grade II listed property.
Dating back to the 1300's and situated in a conservation area, it was important to Mr and Mrs Naylor and the area's residents that the building was refurbished in a manner sympathetic to its history. It is quite something to have delivered a product that even the most discerning residents are pleased with. Much loved by the people of St Albans, The Sally Lunn, originally an old hall house and barn, was once a popular restaurant and tea rooms.
Having been used on many roofs in the area, including the school adjacent to The Sally Lunn, Keymer tiles provided the prestigious looks that only come from a genuine hand made tile, offering longevity, durability and the aesthetics required. The company provided a quality hand-made product suited for the nature of the project and environment. Over time, the tiles will age with natural beauty, looking more striking year upon year.
Mr and Mrs Naylor chose a mix of three colours in the Traditional range, Elizabethan, Antique and Wealden Red, to get that winning aged beauty. It's the first time the couple have used Keymer's hand made clay roof tiles and they have said they would definitely use them again.
An incredibly complex project due to the undulations of the old timber roof, tiling it was a work in progress. Building contractor, Mike Johnson, demonstrated a great deal of technical skill and product knowledge. "It went very smoothly," said Mike.
"Because there were lots of different shapes in the tiles, we were able to select certain tiles to fit smoothly with the curved roofscape. The guys at Keymer were very receptive and helpful too."
Nothing provides a roof with greater aesthetics than the Traditional hand made clay tile range from internationally renowned manufacturer, Keymer - a tile that looks as good today as it did 400 years ago, when it was first made.
The prestigious Traditional tile range ensures the client's exact vision is met. They provide an unrivalled appearance, whether used individually for a sleek uniformed look or mixed to produce the ideal colour blend to suit the project.
A company that has been in existence for over four centuries, Keymer's Traditional clay tile range is the benchmark of genuine hand made clay tiles. For specifiers, architects and roofers, there is no better roofing aesthetic available, whether they are used for a new build or the restoration of a historical landmark.
