Orchard Dean
Product Used: Shire
Colour: Heritage
Description:
Situated in a picturesque market town, the specification for a development of 12 character style period cottages, reflecting the materials indigenous to the region was paramount. Genuine hand made clay tiles from Keymer were the natural choice.
Orchard Dean is centrally located in the traditional town of Alresford. Designed by well known architects Wayland Tunley and built by award winning new homes builder Archstone Lifestyle Homes Ltd, the tasteful mews style development gently rises from The Dean and curves gracefully around a central conical style cottage.
For such an important location, superior materials were employed such as local bricks, hand made roof tiles and high quality joinery. Hand made clay tiles, locally produced using Wealden clay were the natural choice to enable the properties to complement the surrounding architecture.
Two colours from Keymer's Traditional range were chosen for the project - Elizabethan for the roofs and Wealden Red for the verticals. Each tile is genuinely hand made by Keymer using Wealden clay dug from their own pits.
The design of the scheme follows the contours and shape of the original plot. The cottage roofs feature a number of interesting design features including dormer windows, hips, crossed hips, dropped ridges, contrasting ornamentals and the circular roof of the focal point ‘round house'. To remain historically precise, the tiles for the conical cottage roof were expertly individually cut by the roofing contractor to create a roof that epitomises traditional British craftsmanship.
Keymer, who can trace their roots back over 400 years, is one of the few tile manufacturers that still employs many of the traditional craft skills, which have been passed down from maker to maker through the generations. As an indication of their hand made qualities, each Traditional tile bears the individual handprint of its maker on the reverse.
Hand made tiles, unlike machine made ‘hand crafted' tiles, have their own inimitable style offering variations in colour, texture and shape that simply cannot be replicated with machine made products and producing unique roofs that will mature and mellow with age.
Such inherent quality and traditional values make tiles from Keymer the perfect choice for properties required to blend harmoniously with existing buildings, helping to maintain Britain's rich and colourful architecture.
