Description:

The designers of a dramatic redevelopment of a Grade II listed building in Surrey have relied on nearly half a million hand made Keymer tiles to give the project a natural, traditional finish.

Historic country house Banstead Wood dates back to 1894 but, following a fire, was later remodelled and new buildings added. The site, boasting 28-acres of grounds, has been converted into luxury apartments, which are surrounded by protected woodland that has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

In keeping with developer Try Homes' goal to offer residents "all the character of an historic property with the convenience of a new home", Keymer Tiles, sourced from the company's own Wealden clay, were chosen to guarantee a classical look for the roofing.

The six distinct buildings that make up Banstead Wood, including the original country home, Shaw House, were all tiled with Keymer's acclaimed Traditional Elizabethan-coloured plain tiles.

Roofing contractor, Beaumont Roofing of Winkfield, Berkshire laid almost 400,000 tiles to achieve a uniformed, matching effect across the development. These much in demand tiles guarantee a vintage appearance that weathers naturally for a finish that improves with every passing year.

Furthermore, about 100,000 ornamental Wealden Red tiles were vertically hung around the Banstead Wood buildings for a striking, decorative effect.

It was a project where, due to the technically demanding elements of the buildings such as gable and hipped dormers, valleys, boxed gutters, valleys close to hips and a host of other challenges, the extensive skills of the master tiler were of paramount importance.

Keymer has been producing hand made tiles for over four centuries, creating ranges with subtle variations in colour, texture and shapes that simply cannot be replicated with machine products.

Like all Keymer tiles, the Traditional and Ornamental ranges are manufactured in three standard colours - Antique, Elizabethan and Wealden Red - under a Quality Assured system and come backed with a full range of matching fittings.
