Description:
The re-roofing of an exceptionally beautiful and prestigious mansion house has been carried out using Keymer's handmade traditional clay tiles. The important Grade I listed mansion in the Surrey Hills was given an authentic and elegant look thanks to the tiles.
A tremendous roof-scape, which continues from every angle of the house, this unmissable feature meant the right choice of materials, was essential. Specified for their established history and elite quality, the entire roof was stripped and re-roofed using the handmade clay tiles.
An incredibly complex project, the roof joins more than one building. A series of chimneys and different pitches meant that a lot of the technical detail and design specification was a work in progress. Roofing contractors, Karl Terry Roofing Contractors Ltd, demonstrated a great deal of technical skill and product knowledge.
To minimise the amount of mortar on show and to ensure that rain water tilted back onto the roof, peg tiles were cut and used in the traditional method in place of fibre cement undercloak. Therefore, from the ground when looking up, you see tiles. Clay tiles from Keymer's Traditional range had to be mixed from three separate pallets to ensure the correct blend and minimise uniformity.
Produced less than two hours from the project, Keymer's handmade clay tiles reduced the need to bring in tiles from long distance, lowering travel needs and, in turn, the project's carbon footprint.
Keymer has been producing hand made tiles for over four centuries, creating ranges with subtle variations in colour, texture and shapes that simply cannot be replicated with machine products.
