Product Used: Shire

Colour: Downs Red/ Heritage/ Priory Mix

Description:

To put the true finishing touch on a dream home for architect and owner, Nigel Lyles, Chartwell lodge in Norfolk was topped with over 35,000 handmade clay Keymer tiles.

The discretely individual look and colour of each of Keymer's Shire Heritage clay tiles can only come from being made by hand. Across this vast project the full colour range was specified - Downs Red, Heritage and Priory. This meant the entire roof received a natural, all over colour blend that is far more striking than a regimented, machine-made product could ever deliver.

Set within Wood Dalling, the fine house displays a tremendous roof-scape, which continues from every angle of the house. An unmissable feature that catches the eye, the right choice of materials was essential.

The extensive new build was designed to blend seamlessly with the Norfolk locality. With aesthetics that mirror a traditional country home, the handmade brick structure is married perfectly to the authentic clay tiled roof.

Local planning insisted upon the use of handmade materials, as the project was located in a conservation area. Therefore, Keymer's handmade clay tiles were the obvious first choice; with over 500 years of heritage, backed by a proven track record to make developments come alive.

The whole house is capped with varyingly pitched roofs, which therefore made it quite a complex design. It features many different roof slopes and angles, providing a challenge for the tiler. Hence, a plain tile was recommended due to its versatility, not to mention durability.

The project was a labour of love, with all aspects developed on site, from windows to interior fittings. This is synonymous with the care put in to making every Keymer tile that makes up the roof.

Overall, the handmade Keymer tiled roof is the pinnacle of a home that the architect can truly enjoy seeing and living in.
