Keymer's handmade Tradition clay tiles provided a pronounced look of heritage to Canterbury Cathedral's new choir house roof - one that is made to last for years to come.

Working closely with the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral, the building was to be a marriage of traditional and contemporary design. Keymer's clay tiles not only delivered a fresh appearance, but also one steeped in tradition - from their production to their looks.

The architect wished for the project's roof to replicate that of its surrounding peers, therefore, the tiles had to match those which would have originally adorned the Cathedrals roofs.

With over 400 years of heritage and the right range of styles, Keymer's handmade tiles were the architect's obvious choice. These clay tiles offered a closer equivalent to the old roofs around the Cathedral than any other material could have.

By using each of the three colours in Keymer's Traditional clay tile range - Wealden Red, Elizabethan and Antique - the final roof not only matched modern design, but also sang of tradition.

Sitting humbly within the confines of the Cathedral's grounds, the building's roof echoes the visuals of the historical roofs that surround it. Although simple in design, such care went into the project, that it holds its own aura amongst the established buildings. And the roof plays its own large part in doing so.

Whilst the handmade clay roof blends in beautifully with the history around it, it is also well at home with the contemporary, timber clad structure it rests upon - bringing the two together in a quiet harmony.

The new roof, and building, give the choir of Canterbury Cathedral a fresh environment to sing under - one that could not be replicated with modern methods and machine-made values.
